Most homeowners never go under the house, so the crawl space announces itself upstairs first. The usual tells are a musty smell that returns no matter how often you clean, floors that feel cold in winter even with the heat running, condensation on ductwork, and humidity that stays high through the wet months. Insulation lying on the ground instead of held up against the subfloor is another reliable sign — once fiberglass gets wet it stops insulating and starts holding water against the wood.

Sealing the space is half the work; the other half is where the insulation goes. In an encapsulated crawl space, insulation belongs on the foundation walls and rim joists, not stapled between the floor joists where it will sag and absorb moisture. Air sealing comes first — plumbing and wiring penetrations, the sill plate, and the access hatch are the leaks that undo everything else. Done in the right order, the crawl space stops acting as a cold, wet air supply for the rooms above it.
